Pet insurance renewal: what to check
Renewal letters arrive at the worst possible time and are easy to auto-accept. Ten minutes of checking usually finds either a saving or a gap in cover you did not know you had.

In short
Cover types
| Type | How it works | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Lifetime | Vet-fee limit resets each year while you renew continuously | Long-term and chronic conditions |
| Maximum benefit | A fixed amount per condition, with no time limit | One-off illnesses and injuries |
| Time limited | Pays for each condition for a set period, often 12 months | Short, self-resolving problems |
| Accident only | Injuries only, no illness cover | Tight budgets, lowest protection |
The numbers that matter
Compare the annual vet-fee limit first — a low limit is where policies fail in a serious illness. Then the fixed excess, and whether there is a percentage co-payment, which many insurers apply once a pet reaches a certain age and which can add hundreds of pounds to a large claim. Only then compare monthly premiums.
Switching and pre-existing conditions
A cheaper quote is genuinely cheaper only if it covers the same risk. Most UK insurers treat anything diagnosed, treated or showing signs before the new policy started as pre-existing and exclude it — including conditions you have already claimed for. If your pet is healthy and young, switching is usually low risk. If not, staying put and adjusting the excess or limit is often the better move.
What claims actually need
Expect to supply the policy number, the itemised vet invoice, and your pet's clinical history. Some insurers ask for evidence that routine preventative care was maintained, so lapsed vaccinations can complicate a claim for a preventable illness. Keep vaccination dates, invoices and the policy document in the same place and a claim takes minutes rather than an afternoon of searching.
Not missing the renewal date
Continuous cover is what protects a lifetime policy, so a lapse of even a few days can reset the pre-existing clock. Record your renewal date, insurer and policy number and set a reminder around a month ahead — enough time to compare quotes without being rushed into auto-renewal. Pawfile stores the policy details and reminds you before the date.
This is general information, not veterinary advice. Vaccination protocols vary by country, brand of vaccine and your pet's individual risk. Always follow the schedule your own vet recommends. Pawfile is an admin tool for keeping those records and reminders organised — it does not diagnose or treat.
Common questions
- Should I switch pet insurer at renewal?
- Switching can cut the premium, but a new insurer will usually treat anything already diagnosed as a pre-existing condition and exclude it. If your pet has any ongoing or previously claimed condition, compare cover carefully before moving — the cheaper policy may not cover the thing you actually claim for.
- What is the difference between lifetime and annual cover?
- Lifetime policies reinstate the vet-fee limit each year as long as you renew continuously, so long-term conditions stay covered. Time-limited and per-condition policies stop paying after a set period or amount for each condition, which matters most for chronic illness.
- Why has my pet insurance gone up so much?
- Premiums usually rise with your pet's age and with general increases in veterinary costs, and they can rise further after a claim. Reviewing the excess, the vet-fee limit and any co-payment often has more effect than switching provider.
- What paperwork do I need for a claim?
- Typically the policy number, your vet's invoice and clinical history, and often proof that routine preventative care such as vaccinations was kept up to date. Keeping vaccination dates and invoices together makes a claim far quicker to settle.
