Dog worming schedule (UK)
Worming is the treatment owners most often lose track of, because the interval is long enough to forget and short enough to matter. Here is the usual UK pattern for puppies and adults, and what changes if lungworm or travel is involved.

Puppy worming timings
Puppies are commonly born with roundworm passed from their mother, so the first months need frequent treatment. Breeders usually start before you collect the puppy — ask what was given and on which dates, because that determines when the next dose is due.

Adult dogs
Three-monthly worming is the standard baseline for an adult dog in the UK. Monthly treatment is often advised for dogs that scavenge on walks, hunt or catch rodents, are fed a raw diet, or live in a household with young children or an immunosuppressed person. Dose is by weight, so re-weigh your dog before buying a product rather than reusing last year's pack size.
Lungworm needs its own product
Lungworm is carried by slugs and snails and is not covered by an ordinary three-monthly wormer. Prevention requires a prescription product given monthly. It is widespread in much of England and Wales and spreading north, so it is worth asking your practice directly whether they recommend cover where you live.
Travel and tapeworm
Bringing a dog into the UK, Ireland, Finland, Norway or Malta requires a vet-administered tapeworm treatment recorded on the animal health certificate between 24 and 120 hours before arrival. Miss the window and the trip home can be delayed at the border, so book the appointment before you travel out, not on the way back.
Keeping track without a wall calendar
Worming has no vaccination card, so there is usually no record at all — most owners are guessing at "sometime in the spring". Log the date and product each time you treat and set the next date at the same moment. - Most adult dogs in the UK are wormed every three months. Puppies need worming far more often — usually every two weeks from two weeks old until twelve weeks, then monthly until six months. Dogs that scavenge, hunt, eat raw food or live with young children are often wormed monthly.
- How often does a dog need lungworm treatment?
- Lungworm prevention needs a monthly product, because the standard three-monthly wormer does not cover it. Ask your vet whether lungworm is a risk in your area — it is widespread across much of England and Wales.
- Do I need to worm my dog for tapeworm before travelling?
- Yes, for entry to the UK, Ireland, Finland, Norway and Malta a vet must give a tapeworm treatment and record it in the animal health certificate or pet passport between 24 and 120 hours before arrival.
- Is worming the same as flea treatment?
